Nichiren’s Major Writings

Print Friendly

This page will contain links to commentaries I have written on Nichiren’s major writings. My main goal in providing my comentaries or notes on these important writings of Nichiren is to make them more approachable for the average reader. Often times some of these major doctrinal pieces by Nichiren are long, they are tedious in the amount of material quoted, and they are laid out in such detail that it can be mind numbing for many people. With the limited amount of time many people have that they can devote to study, these important writings of Nichiren may get skipped over.

Yet these are very important doctrinal writings by Nichiren. They form the foundation of the philosophy of Nichiren in his belief and teaching of the Lotus Sutra. As such it is vitally important that we know what is contained in these writings. They are not superfluous theory which we can afford to ignore. These writings are what will ensure that Nichiren Buddhism is not corrupted by those who would wish to use the name Nichiren and not follow the heart of Nichiren.

We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to study these writings and ensure that others do the same.

So it is in this spirit that I am tackling these writings and offering up my commentaries as a bridge, or door opener, for everyone to read and study them directly as Nichiren wrote them. If reading these commentaries helps to encourage you to read the writings directly for yourself then I have succeeded in what I intended.

Dharma Quotes

Anyone who understands why the Buddhas expounded many sutras, who knows the position of this sutra in the series of sutras, and who expounds it after my extinction according to its true meaning, will be able to eliminate the darkness of the living beings of the world where he walks about, just as the light of the sun and the moon eliminates all darkness. — Buddha, Lotus Sutra Chapter 21

Recent Random Thoughts

  • Long Road From Stonewall May 9, 2012 - Today the President of the United States, POTUS, made an historic declaration of his belief that same sex couples should be permitted to marry. Growing up as a gay male I never expected to see this day, nor many of the days of recent years that have provided homosexuals with equality. While serving our country during the Vietnam War as a Marine I did so in fear of discovery. When going out at night I did so in fear of discovery. Later on living with my partner who was a career Navy man we both lived in fear of discovery. Who would have imagined that now, I can be open at work and in all aspects of my life without those same fears. And then today I can be gay and have a president of the United States say that he thinks I am and others like me, are entitled to be married. It's been a long road from Stonewall. ×0
  • Interfaith Service Against Genocide Sunday, April 29, 2012 - members from many faith communities came together in Chelmsford, MA to remember the victims of genocide from ancient times to the present. 525 pounds of rice was used to represent then 11.9 million lives taken in the Holocaust. ×0
  • GPS April 26, 2012 - Today, while walking in the forest at Weir National Historic Site the path I was walking on vanished. Rather than turning around I continued along. Finally I realized I was lost. I took out my phone and using the GPS I was able to find a road and the walk back to the park entrance. In life when you stumble or loose your way, is chanting Odaimoku your GPS? ×0
