Senji Sho – Selecting the Right Time: A Tract by Nichiren the Buddha’s Disciple – Appearing in Volume 1 – Writings of Nichiren Shonin published by Nichiren Shu Overseas Propagation Promotion Association, distributed by University of Hawai’i Press, 2003, page 187.
Introduction – This short piece simply sets out to define how I’ll break down my commentary. I also talk about some of the perceived ‘clutter’ in Nichiren’s writings, though it really isn’t clutter at all.
Part I – Time as a Factor in Buddhism – When considering whether to take into account the capacity of the people over the proper time to spread a teaching of Buddhism, Nichiren makes the case that timing is more important than consideration of capacity or receptivity.
Part IIa – Periods in the Spread of Buddhism – This first part discusses the prediction of the Buddha regarding the various times in Buddhism after his extinction and the appropriate practice to be followed in the fifth 500-year period.
Part IIb – Periods in the Spread of Buddhism – Location (India and China)
Part III – Capacity of People in Relation to Correct Time
Part IV – Critique of Various Schools of Buddhism at Time of Nichiren
